GENERAL

NAME: Carolina Lynn Foster-Hayes
NICKNAMES: She doesn't really advocate for any, but acceptable ones she's heard are: Lina, Care, Cici.
AGE/DOB: 15 | October 31
BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female; she/her
SEXUALITY: Unsure. Seriously. Someone help.
HOMETOWN: Richmond, VA

CONCEPT: Timid bookworm decides to try being main character instead of sidekick, progresses slowly.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Nothing about Carolina screams 'exotic' or 'notice me', save for her eyes. It's easy to overlook her, pretty or not, until you see those bright electric blue eyes. It's also easy to overlook that she's Addy's sister until you see those eyes (although if you ask Carolina, Addy is far more gorgeous than she) Her soft brown hair, with touches of honey, is generally kept long. Like her sister, it can be left in disarray if she's spent all night reading or she's gone for a swim recently (which is often), but generally it's got a natural wave to it and looks well kept. Her face is sweet and heart shaped, her smile warm and open, and those eyes are almost always bright, giving her a very 'girl next door' look. Carolina likes pretty things, but she often doesn't bother with makeup unless someone puts it on her or suggests it. If she does, it's very light and natural looking.

When it comes to clothes, Carolina favors a variety of things. Flowy dresses, jeans, anything that's cute and comfortable and fits that vibe she's got going on. She loves to swim, it's her means of exercise that's part of her daily routine, so can often be seen lounging in her bathing suit at any given time. She kind of brings that beachy vibe into what she wears. A shell motif, a sort of water hippie vibe. Her skin has the healthy color of someone who is outside often, and her figure is developing well. She's average height, not super short or tall, and her body is toned from all that swimming but not overly muscular. She is a typical girl who would like to say she doesn't care, but. It would be a lie. She favors the skirt in the uniform, and tries to stick to the rules as much as possible, but. Things happen throughout the course of a day.

HEIGHT: 5'4"

PERSONALITY

LIKES: Books, music, singing, playing guitar, writing (especially lyrics), honey, light colors, the beach, swimming, flowers, sorbet

DISLIKES: Confrontation, being overlooked, asserting herself, that she can't stop being overlooked without asserting herself, cold weather, anything related to math, lima beans, coffee, going shopping

PERSONALITY:

If someone only had one word to describe Carolina Foster-Hayes, a perfect one would be soft. She is the epitome of what people generally think of when they picture a southern lady, and is demure and humble almost to a fault. For Carolina, her first instinct is to stand back and observe, keeping her silence until it's either impolite to remain quiet or she feels there is something she needs to say. It's often described as shyness, which can be incredibly accurate when she doesn't know people, and being boisterous has always terrified her a little. Carolina is gentle, she is kind, and she can sometimes be introverted almost to the point of being unhealthy. For her, most of the good stuff happens in her books or in the stories she writes in her mind. It's easier to read about things happening to others than to go out and have those adventures yourself, after all. Safer, even. This is a naive way of thinking and, quite honestly, she's growing a little tired of being naive.

Carolina has been itching to experience things as a more active participant. She sees how effortlessly her sister makes friends and has fun, how she would be as endearing and charming and likeable and fun as any beautiful princess in a fairytale that people fall in love with, while it's often hard for Carolina to be thought of at all. She doesn't begrudge her sister, either of them, for forging their paths and doing things first. Her family is wonderful and supportive and good, but she does want to start doing things too. She wants to be a main character instead of a supporting role. Only, she doesn't quite know how to go about it. She's always been the bookworm with her head in the clouds (or more accurately a story) and isn't quite sure how one starts to assert themselves. (There was a misguided attempt last year with getting a boy to like her. It involved a lot of creepy stalker moves. She doesn't want to talk about it.) Joining the band was not just for her love of music. Okay, mostly it was, but it has also helped her step out from the shadows and start figuring herself out in the open. Carolina has always been good with the 'sit quietly and behave' ideas, since her mother taught her daughters about tradition and being ladylike and proper, but she's always been itching to do more.

A big part of who she is does revolve around being kind and being good, but there are also parts that are more about just being...free. She's always enjoyed swimming as her escape, finding the fact that it's just her and the water soothing. Most of her biggest ways of relaxing involve being by herself with just her thoughts, though, and she's trying to change that. Carolina likes people, she enjoys company (even if she's always technically been the follower), and is bright and engaging when talking with them about things they love or she loves. She has a tendency to care more for the passions and chances of others than her own, and her focus on the music she desperately loves is only because her passion burns too brightly for her to ignore. It makes her feel alive. It makes her feel like a main character, which is something she's gradually learning how to be. She's always been the supporting role, is good at it even, but she is figuring out that it's okay to want a little attention every now and then.

Despite her (so far) timid desire to be a little more assertive, Carolina is still very much a supporting type of character. She is used to being the backup, used to being a follower. Even her adventures into music started because her friends were doing it. She is a good person, a good girl, but she is also very easily influenced. Carolina will never be the head of the clique, but she will happily follow whoever earns her loyalty. She is exceedingly loyal to her friends, almost to blindness at times, and is very good at doing what needs to be done for them. She's not so good at doing what needs to be done for herself, though, but she's not terribly concerned about it. She likes being the reasonable one who makes sure everyone is at least a little informed before they do whatever it is they are considering doing. Carolina is a smart girl, often having trouble resisting the urge to let that show, but she also knows when to step back and let others shine. She's not exactly protective and bold enough to be considered a mother hen, but she does excel at taking care of people in her own way. After all, her mother wanted her daughters to be proper, well behaved ladies, and well behaved ladies know how to take care of people. Carolina is definitely good at being good, though, but can be easily convinced that even a bad idea is a good one. Probably because she's itching to be a little bit bad sometimes.

Most of the time, she is most comfortable (and most likely found) with her nose in a book. She loves reading, loves learning about new things and places and stories, and it's always been her inspiration for her own writing. Sure, she might not have ever experienced the things she writes or reads about, but it's basically the same thing right? Carolina can get lost in thought, a daydream, anything that reminds her of the books she so loves and it's often hard to get her out of her head and into the moment. She often feels overlooked in real life, but the characters in the books she reads always seem to have things that make her feel like a part of them. She's trying to tear herself away, but really, books are almost as big of a passion for her as music is. She's settling for just trying to experience her own stories instead of reading about people who don't exist. Which has definitely taught her that she doesn't want to live like someone who doesn't exist.

SKILLS

LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English

PATRONUS: She can't cast a patronus yet, but if she could it would be a black and white Mare. Those with the black and white mare have a free soul and loyal heart. They are fiercely loyal, sometimes to their detriment, and often put others before themselves. Those with the black and white are also highly emotional, although don’t always show this. Their emotional intelligence is high and they can connect to others well.

SKILLS: -Singing: From an early age, it was obvious that Carolina had a talent for singing. Her mother put her in voice lessons when she asked,
though it was more to help train her in all the intricacies of singing than make her better. Her voice is a light alto, very suited for pop music, and definitely more smooth than she could ever hope to be when talking to someone. (Voice references One and Two)

-Writing: As a lover of books, it is only logical that she also enjoys writing. While Carolina enjoys writing stories of her own, she loves writing lyrics to songs. Music has always been important in her life, lifting her up or soothing her when she's upset and otherwise going along with her moods, and it didn't take long for her to start writing her own lyrics as a result.

-Books: Carolina loves books. She will read very nearly anything, probably has already read it actually, and as a result knows a lot of pointless book trivia that nobody would ever really care about (and many wonder how she even found this stuff out in the first place) She is an exceptionally fast reader, retains everything even if she's only (gasp!) read the book once.

-Surfing: During one of many holidays to various beaches over the years, Carolina discovered surfing. It wasn't really a typical past time where her mother's family was concerned, but she felt drawn to the idea and wanted to learn almost immediately. She's pretty good now, though by no means ready to go pro.

-Swimming: Always one to favor escapes that don't require a lot of people or thought outside her own head, swimming easily became one of her favorites. It was both Carolina's love for the water and her natural affinity for it that sparked the passion, and she's been swimming for as long as she can remember. Some people run to stay in shape, Carolina swims. If she can't swim, she'll run. Anything that allows her some solitude where she can just be in her own head.

HISTORY:

As far as babies of the family were concerned, Carolina definitely won the award for easiest. Sure, she was spoiled by both sides of her family and her parents, but she never grew into that 'bratty' stage so many youngest children do. In fact, she was probably the most well-behaved little girl in the history of little girls. Carolina was always a quiet child, preferring to observe things as she toddled along after her older sisters, and never really got into much trouble. She was shier than said sisters, and found it easy to play independently or entertain herself. Pleasing others was always a high concern for her, and she never wanted to disappoint anyone in her family. She learned a lot from the differing sides of her family, and the opposing views shaped who she is greatly. From her mother's family, she learned how to behave and be good and carry herself like a proper lady. From her father's side, she learned it was okay to be herself still and that she could express interests that didn't align with everyone else. Most importantly, though, she learned loyalty and kindness. Acceptance. On all sides. And it inspired her more 'supporting role' tendencies.

Two things happened at a very early age. First, Carolina discovered the magic of books, brought on by following her mother and soaking up her love of literature. The power of a story resonated with her when she was young, and it never really left. Second, she discovered music. To this day she can't really say where it came from, all she knows is that almost as soon as she could talk she seemed to be singing. She discovered how many ways music could change or influence a mood, or reflect her life, and it didn't take long for the enjoyment to become an obsession. (She prefers the term 'passion' however) Her parents and what they wanted for their daughters might have been different with each girl, but nobody questioned either of her great loves. Carolina never argued with her parents if they wanted her to do or try something, she never resisted expectations, preferring to go along and make whoever was asking her happy rather than act out. In turn, she was encouraged in both of these passions, and given everything she needed to succeed (not to mention enjoy) at them fully.

As she grew and developed, it was easy to see that her beloved older sister Addy had some serious opinions about tradition and magic and really anything that was 'expected'. When her sister ran away, it was the most upsetting time in her young life, especially since little Carolina couldn't understand why going to magic school was such an awful thing. She herself was looking forward to it, having shown a talent for magic early on that was pretty easily tamed the more she practiced. In fact, she found herself eagerly anticipating her own chance to go off like her sisters had. Initially, Carolina figured she would be going to Ilvermorny, but once her sisters were accepted into Gooseberry her parents shifted their focus into getting her accepted there for her freshman year. With her talent for music and her good grades, it wasn't hard for them to make that happen. Carolina was happy with the news, glad to be going where her sisters went (even though being left behind at home hadn't been an issue for the introverted young girl). Her mother had, after all, taught her to be smart and it was those smarts that helped her talent get her in.

Arriving at Gooseberry was definitely a whole new world. Carolina was a bit overwhelmed by a lot of things upon her arrival. There were so many people, for one thing. Everyone seemed vastly more talented than she, and they seemed to be more accustomed to the limelight too. Still, Addy was there, and watching how easily her sister made friends inspired Carolina to try and do the same. She settled in pretty nicely, even more so once she became friends with Natalie and Marie. Ever the follower, it was easy to find people she liked and then just...stick with them. Things were made even easier when Natalie suggested they form a band, and the mutual love for music kind of sealed the deal for Carolina. She'd been toying with the idea of stepping out of her box a little anyway, and music had always made her feel more confident than she normally was. Carolina can by no means boast any sort of organizational or leadership claim on the band, but she is incredibly invested in it. She loved having an outlet for her music, and having friends that occasionally push her to do more than just observe are things she wouldn't trade for anything. This inspiration led to a few misguided attempts to be more of a main character in her life, one of which included trying to make something come of her crush on an upperclassmen. Lucky for her, Casper Kim is a better person than most would be, and her sister helped convince him to not spread her mortifying stint into stalker-ness to the entire school. Carolina still doesn't want to talk about it, though.

Despite her bold attempts not being executed quite so well, her Freshman year was a success. She managed to avoid whatever it was that happened at the end of the year, didn't get involved much with the 'ghost' drama, and made leaps and bounds on stepping into her own little version of the spotlight thanks to The Heretics. As she heads into her second year, she is feeling a little more confident. It's still hard for her to step up and assert herself, but she's feeling pretty good. Gooseberry has a music program, and music helps her feel more like a main character rather than a sidekick (even though she's still totally Tally and Marie's sidekick, let's be real). The band even performed at a quodpot game shortly before school came back into session, so she's still riding the high of their "big break". Her studies are interesting and fun, and she's ready to see what Sophomore year has in store.

SCHOOL

YEAR: Sophmore
HOUSE: Ribbonfin
SORTING: Her Sorting wasn't really anything to write home about. None of the emblems spoke to her as strongly as Ribbonfin, though she was tempted for longer than she cares to admit about choosing Azurcrest so she could be with Addy. In the end, it was the kind and gentleness of the fish that called to her most. It felt like they were kindred spirits, really.
WAND: 9", English Oak, Snallygaster Heartstring , bendy.
FAMILIAR: A Siamese cat named Kai (the Japanese word for 'ocean')

CLASSES: Charms, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, Transfiguration, Wizard Lit, Magizoology
ADVANCED STUDY: Music. While she's not entirely sure if she wants to try and pursue a professional career, she does know that she would love nothing more than to somehow sit and read/write books while playing/performing/writing music for the rest of her life. When she found out about the advanced study, she was probably a little more forward than anyone would've expected in begging asking Ms. Thrussell if she could take it. Her accomplishments and talent spoke for themselves, and she was allowed to enroll.
SENIOR PROJECT: She is not 100% sure yet, but she is trying to work out if she can somehow write a ballad (like the old school stories set to song ballads) about life at Gooseberry.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Carolina is a good student, as really nothing else can be expected from someone who likes to learn as much as she does. It doesn't come easily to her unless it's Charms or Literature, but she doesn't have to struggle too much. (She does ask Addy for help in Potions frequently, though) She is not a straight A student, but doesn't stress it that much. The only thing she cares about is not failing, and since she gets As and Bs, that's never been a worry.
EXTRACURRICULARS: Choir, Boating, Gardening, The Heretics
